Does the Wyze Thermostat link to a gateway in the same manner as the Wyze Lock? Do you need a gateway or can the thermostat be controlled from another location without a gateway?
There is no gateway with the thermostat. It just connects directly to your wifi.

Make sure to check your current thermostat wires in the compatibility checker before purchasing!
