Very Disappointed with Wyze Video Doorbells

My VD is just a $50 decoration beside my door since March. During the 3 months of terrible app performance on all devices early this year, I tried re-installing the doorbell, and now it won’t connect to any wifi network.
Don’t waste keystrokes telling me it’s my network or call WYZE, life is too short to try the same tests five times, and trust the result will change on the sixth.
This only took 10 minutes to type because the keyboard on my tablet covers thr text, and if I rotate, it dumps me back into camera view and I have to navigate back through the forum to continue typing.

Yes, same happens on my Smart Phone. Typing blind. Corrections are a bitch!

I checked the forum for opinions and complaints about the video doorbells, both from reading the reviews and the specifications came to the decision not to buy them

After trying an Wyze Cam Outdoor and not liking it’s operation or performance I learned my lesson with Wyze!

The Wyze Cam Outdoor ended up in the best location, at the dump. Battery life was horrible, and eventually wouldn’t take a charge, but that’s what you would expect from 2nd rate batteries Wyze chose.

The person detection in CPL is pretty inaccurate in my experience. At least 50% of the person detects I get on my Wyze Cams that are supported are just shadows or trees waving.

Certainly not an incentive to upgrade to CP since I assume it uses the same AI.

When I bought the first V2 and Pan, the motion detection was good, shortly after Wyze changed it, i believe to something in house. Been crappy ever since.

I have CP and use the selection rectangles successfully to block out everything except our porch and the sidewalk leading up to the porch. That eliminated the street and the waving tree branches and leaves and the waving grass on either side of the sidewalk leading up to the porch. In fact, the selection rectangles did the trick even before CP was added.

This explanation of the detection zone makes sense. I have always wondered why it did not work properly. This sounds like it may be a tricky one for the software developers to fix. I would be satisfied if they could fix the “3of3” connection problem though. Luckily I have another cheap VDB (Yeoman) that I paid $45 for over 2 years ago that still works (I have to replace the batteries monthly). The free cloud storage ran out after about 1 year, but it still stores the video locally on an SDcard (which the Wyze VDB should have the ability to do)!

I’m not sure about it making sense. Nothing does any more! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: But it is a plausible explanation and the drop in detection efficiency did coincide with the FW update (.042) that introduced the rotation blip when the cam loads… supposedly as a result of the same coding in the update that made the video compatible with the Monitoring Tab feed (HMS).

The only reason I know this Is because the same exact update (.042) caused a 90° rotation of my TinyCam Pro feed of the doorbell. I posted a reply at that time to @MrMovie, who discovered the flaw about a week after it was released.

It is the exact same update that caused the 3 of 3 loading issue… Which may very well be the same flawed video rotation coding. However that is just my theory as correlation does not = causation.

This was the update that was pulled from the servers because of Cam bricking.

4.25.1.042 (March 30, 2022)

  • Added support for Alexa and Google Assistant integration
  • Fixed a timestamp issue that caused persisting Error 06 on Wyze Video Doorbell Event videos
  • Fixed a bug that caused inaccurate offline statuses
  • Fixed a video rotation issue in Wyze Home Monitoring
  • Fixed a bug that prevented night vision changes
  • Fixed a bug that displayed incorrect chime firmware versions in Device Info
  • Fixed a bug that prompted updating when using the most recent update
  • Fixed a bug that prevented future setup after a Wi-Fi disconnection during pairing

Note: We are pausing this firmware while we look into the cause of reports of longer loading times for live streams or connections failing at step 3/3. We apologize to anyone impacted by this issue.

Step 3of3, step 1 of 3, error code 2005, slow notications or missed, detection zones or no detection at all. there’s so many things not working correctly, that did before.
The missing SD card, just forces you into a subscription. That’s what Wyze business model has became,

I agree, there are too many issues with this original doorbell. They should just offer us all a half price deal on the VDB Pro. I like the CamPlus (99 camers) at $100 a year. It is a decent deal, that could be made better by throwing in a subscription to HMS (which would tempt me to get one). All the problems with the old door/window sensors really scare me off trying the new ones. The only product Wyze has made (that I have purchased) that I have had zero issues with is the original Wyze Scale. That product has been bullet-proof for me!

I don’t want a battery operated camera of any sort.

My old doorbell was already wired & powered so it was essentially plug-and-doesn’t-actually-work-as-advertised-but-should for the Wyze VD. :flushed:

Messing with batteries is something I left behind in the 90’s with my old X10 hardware.

The VDB Pro is dual power. Wired 24V like the VDBv1 or internal battery operated. But, the Pro requires the chime as a bridge for WiFi access.

Hmm, not mentioned in the description but I see it now buried down in the FAQ’s.

The real question is does it work?

It’s also double the price of the VD that doesn’t work.
And, I have two of the non-working ones so even more $$$!

Once bitten, twice shy…

I’m with you there. I don’t have one either, mainly because it wasn’t available when I got my v1.

It seems to get good reviews, but that just means Wyze hasn’t had enough time yet with the egg beaters in the FW update coding.

It would have to do something really special for me to go thru an upgrade. I am still hung up on the chime as a bridge requirement.

Agreed, a discount to the new version (assuming that is it better) is the least Wyze could do for those of us who bought into the VDBv1. I was an early adopter of the VDBv1, and it has never performed well. The video quality is so poor, it is hard to recognize myself standing in front it. I have CamPlus on it (not light) and it fails to detect humans at the door at least 50% of the time. The detection zone absolutely does not work on these devices, but that is not limited to VDB - I have a very wooded yard and get constant notifications when the wind blow from V1, V2, and V3 cams, regardless of sensitivity or masking with detection zones.

Wyze knows full well that there are major issues with the VDBv1, which is why they follow so quickly with VDBv2 from a different vendor. Now are a just loyal orphans.

Don’t forget Error code 09 on all phones with a certain aspect ratio because Wyze broke event video playback in June 2021. This, combined with too-slow authentication, makes the VDB basically a very expensive normal doorbell.

Regarding 3/3 authentication hang on VDv1 firmware issue, it’s been more than 6 months. Can Wyze provide a way to rollback to previously known good FW while we’re waiting? It seems to go to some sort of “deep sleep mode” as it usually gets hung in the morning. When we “restart”(on the app) couple of times, it seemed to work most of the day but not always. But it got much worse today for some reason. No matter how many times I “restart” it keeps hung on 3/3…Please help

I’m with you here…all the same problems. I thought the doorbell was great at first, but time has proved it to be a real pain. I’ve had to turn off all notifications because of false positives and many undetected positives. I actually like the video quality though…it’s much better than my original “Ring”. But without proper detection and notification, …I may have to go back to a Ring. Sad, because I’ve promoted Wyze products now for years, but now seem to have problems with several of their products not performing as described (my Wyze Lock keeps spontaneously locking on its own). I like their products, but only if they work as described. I could tolerate some of these issues if they would fess up to the problem and then come out with a fix…this is getting quite frustrating!
