Fake Wyze website!

I saw a Facebook post asking about the website https://wyzecam.store. I’m 95% sure it’s just a scam place selling Chinese versions that aren’t Wyze compatible, so I want to raise awareness. Maybe @UserCustomerGwen could alert people in a forum post and on Facebook to be watch out for it. If anything, just to clarify that it’s not related to or endorsed by Wyze in any way.

Edit: I see they’re selling everything cheaper too. 99.9% scam.

I’m sure Wyze Attorneys will get right on this.

Can’t have inferior products tarnish their image

Yeah unless they put a store right on Broadway in New York. Because you know that’s cheap

Yeah, because now people will complain to Wyze when they order and it doesn’t come or doesn’t work.

The domain name was registered a week ago and using CloudFlare name servers, so yeh, it’s fake.

All the hallmarks of a fake site to include their prices are cheaper.

Chances are they are shipping fakes, or a higher chance is you won’t get anything at all… they promise to ship and hope you go long past the date to open a dispute with paypal, or that you use a debit card instead of a credit card to purchase. There are so many potential scam options with these sorts of sites it’s crazy. Hopefully it gets shut down soon.

It is registered through the CloudFlare registry through the NameCheap registrar that is using the “personal data redaction” feature:

It is absolutely a fake/scam - no credible business would ever cover up RDAP and Whois information to the point where no person can contact them. They are using CloudFlare’s privacy tools (Whois Redaction) which can be submitted through here: https://www.cloudflare.com/abuse/form along with NameCheap Whois redaction.

There’s a good chance the site was set up to just get Wyze login and password info.

We’ve been posting cautions any time we see this come up since it is not an authentic Wyze site. Please be careful.

They’re using WordPress also, but since WordPress doesn’t host it you can’t report it to them.

I agree, the obvious blow to it being a faux Wyze website was the physical address in NYC. Aside from that, I am curious how you were able to find out that it was an imposter/fake? I see that you diligently wrote down CloudFlare/NameCheap/Whois and DRAP. Would you mind explaining to all of us a non-techie folks that don’t necessarily know all the ins and out - how exactly does one find out info about a website being fake? Do we open up our browser to CloudFare and paste the copied link from the website that seems t be questionable? I assume there’s a lot more digging around to do. I clearly do not know - but I certainly would like to, so that I (and many other peeps on this forum) hopefully will never fall prey to any imposter websites! Sorry if my queries are woefully boring. It is much appreciated, ElectroStrong, that you put all this information out here - specifically, your headline (which any non techie can comprehend)! Thank you!

You guys know that the Wyze cams are Chinese cams, right? Wyze didn’t make their cam, they took an already existing Chinese cam. Google it. No different than what harbor freight does, find the manufacturer of a product in China and have their logo put on it.

Yeah, but Wyze has made custom internal hardware and firmware.

Yes…for those who don’t want to spend time trying to research it as it takes a bit of digging, the partner company to Wyze that supplies the hardware for the cameras is Xiaomi - they had a similar camera (the Xiaofang) that was available on Amazon for a period of time as well:

Wyze, to my knowledge, would have a license with Xiaomi to distribute the product within a certain market. Within the EU market, iSmartAlarm seems to be the licensee that has branded their products as “Spot+”
https://www.ismartalarm.com/

The core hardware of these devices should be very similar - there is probably a bootloader difference or something from a software perspective that makes it so that you cannot flash Spot+ firmware on the Wyze, but I’m sure it can be overcome. Wyze does not really manufacture the cameras - they basically just distribute it and have invested in a better infrastructure to support the cameras compared to the competitors (and offered it as a better price).

It really doesn’t change the problem with this website though. The Wyze brand is a brand name, which means it has it’s own protections beyond the hardware. If you are the licensee of an OEM product and you are allowed to rebrand it, that is part of a legal agreement that more then likely has royalties involved. In this situation, a company claiming to resell the “Wyze” brand from their site is considered illegal in the US and more then likely violates international law as well.

All I know is I bought this off of Amazon before I found Wyze and I thought for $60 a Camera was a good price and it was absolute junk. They replaced it with the second one and it was worse than the first one. When it would pan ran it would make this real loud grinding noise in the talking back-and-forth between the camera and the person with the app rarely worked. And then I found Wyze and the skies parted

DO NOT BUY!

Sorry @ucurgypsy - the information I conveyed is more for a technical validation perspective and shouldn’t really concern you too much. The main point to get across that with a DRAP response or a WHOIS response, they usually list who you contact (at a company for example) if you have a problem with their domain (i.e. they have a botnet in their network and you want to let their system administrator know that they have an issue that seems to be starting from their domain).

Example of Microsoft.com:

You can see that there is a phone number, email, and contact information that you can reach out to in order to resolve an issue. For companies, it is very rare to not make this information public. But there are services that allow for anonymity that are sometimes used because of “questionable” content (or because they want to just be anonymous). Scammers don’t want any contact information shared, so they will typically use these services so that people cannot identify where the domain originated from because you need to contact the company that registered the domain in order to start any legal injunction.

I personally would never buy from a domain that doesn’t have their online WHOIS information public - it shows they don’t want accountability when it comes to a mistake and/or they are running potentially fraudulent transactions. This is a generalization, but it will conform to the stated outcome more times then it will not if you decide to test it.

The hardware is almost identical and before Wyze put out their own RTSP firmware, I was able to load Xiaomi DeFang firmware with RTSP to try it out. It was basically the same way you manually flash Wyze firmware and didn’t take any special hacking
That was at least a year ago, if not more so they may have made some hardware changes since however.

Thank you very much! I learned a lot from all that you explained!! I’ll always check WHOIS online whenever something seems like it’s sketchy or too good to be true. Again, many thanks for all of your easy to understand info that you provided me with
