Is there any way to control the motion detection? For example, turning it off occasionally.

You can turn off the event detection by the following sequence:
Settings ( Gear in upper right of Home Screen)/Event Recording/Motion Detected/Turn the slider off
This will turn off the motion detection for the camera and leave only an actual button push to trigger an event.
You can turn off the notifications by Settings ( Gear in upper right of Home Screen)/Notifications/ Turn the slider off

it also has a motion detection sensitivity setting
